One of the questions I get asked a lot is whether block heels or stilettos are better, and the honest answer is, that it really depends. After years of designing shoes, I’ve learned that heel type can completely change how a shoe feels, looks and wears throughout the day, even when the style is almost identical. So if you’ve ever wondered which one you should choose, I thought I’d break it down and share the real differences for you, to help you decide which is right for you.
What's the actual difference?
Okay so as the name suggests, a block heel is a chunky heel which is like a block. They tend to have rounded edges, or can be more square but the main thing is that they're wide all the way down, giving you a much larger surface area on the ground. A stiletto heel is much slimmer in silhouette and can be straight or tapered.
Which is more comfy?
A lot of people think that block heels are more comfy, and there is certainly some truth in that- but it isn't actually that they're more comfortable, more that they tend to feel more supportive. Because block heels give you a larger surface area to walk on, if you're not used to wearing heels they do tend to feel a bit more sturdy underfoot. There's also more holding you up at the base of your heel which defintiely helps reduce the wobble if you're not a big heels wearer.
That said, if a stiletto has been properly designed and the heel balances correctly with the pitch of the shoe, they can be just as comfortable as a block heel. Whilst you're walking on a smaller surface area, as long as everything is where it shoud be, and the shoes supports your foot, there's no reason why a stiletto can't be just as comfy as it's sturdier alternative.
How does the heel change the overall look of a shoe?
One of the biggest differences between block heels and stilettos is the effect they have on the overall look of an outfit. Even when the upper of the shoe is exactly the same, the heel shape can completely change the mood. Stilettos tend to feel a little dressier and more refined, giving a slightly sharper, more elongated silhouette, while block heels create a more modern, relaxed feel that works beautifully for outfits you want to look polished but not overly formal. Both are great, it just depends what vibe you're after.
Block heels vs stilettos- occasion guide
Let's look at some examples, where two similar styles are doing the same job, but they're heel gives quite a different look...
So which should I choose?
The truth is there isn’t a right choice, only the right one for you for the occasion. I always think that choosing between a block heel and a stiletto is less about rules and more about how you want to feel, where you’re going and how long you’ll be on your feet. Both have their place and both can be just as beautiful and wearable when they’re thoughtfully designed. If you’re deciding between the two, here’s a quick guide to help you:
Choose a block heel if:
- you're not used to wearing heels and want a bit of extra stability
- you want something that works from day to evening
- you're after a slightly more relaxed, modern feel
Choose a stiletto if:
- you want a slightly dressier look
- you like a sharper silhouette
- you want a shoe that feels more occasion ready
Ultimately, the best shoes are the ones that make you feel confident the moment you put them on, because when a shoe feels right you can always tell by the way you walk. Hopefully this has been helpful, but ultimately you should always go for comfort and confidence first and foremost!
Love,
Rachel xx
