Let’s face it, life happens and sometimes that means your shoes end up a little worse for wear. But before you panic about muddy marks or scuffs on your suede shoes, take a breath and relax… because cleaning them is actually really simple.
One of the reasons I love using suede in my designs is because it’s much more durable than you might think and has all the amazing properties of natural leather. With a little care (and the right tools), your shoes will look almost as good as new in no time.
Here’s how to bring them back to life:
What You'll Need:
-
A soft brush (for removing surface dirt — something like a classic shoe polish brush or even a clean, dry paintbrush);
-
A suede block (also called a suede eraser)
-
A small, firm brush (a nail brush works well, or even a clean toothbrush!
Top tip: You can pick up loads of great suede cleaning tools at most shoe repair shoes- I found this one from Timpsons.
Step by Step Guide to Cleaning Suede Shoes
1. Let the dirt dry completely
Trying to clean suede while it’s wet can make the problem even worse, so give your shoes time to fully dry if they’re muddy or damp.

2. Gently brush off surface dirt
Use your soft brush to remove as much dried dirt or dust as you can. Be gentle- this is about gently lifting away the top layer, not scrubbing.
3. Target stubborn marks with your suede block
For tougher marks or stains, rub the area gently with your suede block. Don’t press too hard- small, circular motions often work best. The block will slowly lift the mark without harming the texture- but they're powerful little blocks so go gently!

4. Buff the suede back to life
Once you’re happy the marks are gone, take your small, firm brush and gently fluff the nap of the suede. This helps revive the soft, even finish and gives your shoes that ‘just new’ feel again.
Top Tip: Repeat the process if needed- really muddy shoes might take a couple of goes!
5. Brush in one direction for a smooth finish
As a final step, brush the suede gently in the same direction all over to even out the texture.

And just like that… your shoes are back in business
Whether you’ve been dancing in a field or just caught in a downpour, don’t be afraid to wear your suede shoes. They’re designed to be enjoyed — and now you know how easy they are to care for too.
So next time your shoes need a little TLC, come back to this post — and give them the love they deserve.
Love,
Rachel xx

P.S. Want to make your shoes last even longer? A good quality suede protector spray can help shield against water and stains. It’s a great little investment for peace of mind on your big day (and beyond). Available at your local shoe repairers or shoe shop.
