It's no secret I'm a big fan of suede shoes, there's just something so elegant about suede, from it's gorgeous softness to the way it really emphasises a colour. It's also pretty timeless so will last you for years to come. That said, I'm also aware that many people are a bit wary of suede as a material, particularly as we come into the autumn and winter months, and the weather is a bit less shoe friendly!
However, for years I've said that suede is actually a lot more forgiving than people think (and definitely much easier to maintain than satin!). It's leather at the end of the day, which is a natural material and therefore used to being outside! Taking a few simple steps before and after you wear your suede shoes, will ensure they'll look as good as new wear after wear... after wear!
Here’s a simple step by step guide to help you maintain your suede shoes and keep them looking beautiful for years to come.
1. Use a spray protector
Before you wear your suede shoes, one of the best things you can do is treat them with a good quality suede protector spray. This creates a water-resistant barrier that helps prevent rain and dirt from penetrating the fabric. Simply hold the spray about 20cm from the shoe and apply a light, even coat (you may wish to apply a couple of coats for extra protection). Be sure to let the spray dry for 24 hours before wearing the shoes for the best result.
2. Remove dirt marks regularly
One of the easiest ways to keep your suede shoes in top condition is by brushing them after each wear. Use a soft, clean brush to gently remove dirt or dust. You can get suede brushes from your local shoe repairer, but if you can't get hold of one, a soft, dry (and clean!) toothbrush also works. Brushing in one direction to preserve the texture and avoid damaging the surface of the suede.
3. Treat stains when dry
If you spot a stain on your suede shoes, don’t panic! First let the dirt dry- if you try and remove it when wet, you'll just smear it all over your shoes! Once dry, use a clean, dry brush to remove as much of the dirt as possible before using a suede block to gently work away at the marks. Repeat as necessary until all marks are removed- slow and gentle is the way to go to avoid damaging the suede.
4. Store your shoes safely
If your suede shoes do get wet, gently blot them with a clean cloth and allow them to dry naturally- never use direct heat like a hair dryer, as this can cause the suede to stiffen or crack. When you're not wearing your shoes, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and stuff them with tissue paper or shoe trees to prevent them from becoming misshapen. Once dry, if you have a dust bag, use it to keep your shoes free from dust and dirt.

Suede shoes add a touch of elegance to any outfit, and they're a lot more durable than people think. By following these simple steps- protect them, clean them and store them, you can ensure your suede shoes stay in perfect condition and enjoy them for years to come!
Happy cleaning!
